Description

People with Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disease (ADRD) need special home care. It poses challenges often overlooked in basic training. This course is designed to explain what ADRD is and how it changes how patients think and act. It teaches home care staff how to handle tough behaviors during daily care routines. The goal is to build skills and confidence to provide effective, compassionate care.

Intended Audience

This course is for caregivers who work with patients who have Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD). It includes home health aides, certified nursing assistants, personal care assistants, and companions. Anyone who helps ADRD patients with daily care in their homes must be a part of this two-hour training. 

Objectives

Objective 1: Understand Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD).

Learn: Define dementia, Alzheimer's disease, and how ADRD differs from normal aging with clear examples.
Act: Identify signs of ADRD and recognize conditions that can cause similar symptoms.

Objective 2: Use effective communication techniques with ADRD patients.

Learn: Understand how ADRD affects a person's ability to communicate and comprehend information
Act: Apply proper verbal and non-verbal communication techniques that reduce confusion and build trust with ADRD patients.

Objective 3: Manage the challenging behaviors of ADRD patients.

Learn: Identify common challenging behaviors at each stage of ADRD and understand possible triggers.
Act: Make the patients calm by using strategies that still maintain their dignity as a person.

Objective 4: Assist ADRD patients with daily care routines.

Learn: Recognize how ADRD affects a person's ability to perform daily tasks like dressing, eating, bathing, and toileting.
Act: Break tasks into simple steps and give clear directions one at a time. Help patients with their daily routines in ways that match their abilities.

Objective 5: Work effectively with families for quality comfort care.

Learn: Understand the emotional challenges families face when caring for loved ones with ADRD across all stages.
Act: Use compassionate, clear language to discuss sensitive topics such as feeding issues, comfort measures, and care preferences.
